The Ottawa County Board of Commissioners is expected to take up an anti-abortion resolution next week, venturing into cultural issues most county boards dare not go. 

County board Chair Joe Moss and Vice Chair Sylvia Rhodea announced Thursday, April 18, they would bring up the “resolution to promote life” at the Tuesday, April 23 board meeting. 

Moss, Rhodea and other commissioners affiliated with an ultra-conservative platform known as Ottawa Impact only two days ago filed for re-election to the board.

Opper said in a letter to the commission she is declining to prosecute the matter based on insufficient evidence. “I am simply concluding that I cannot prove charges against her," Opper said in a statement. 

"While the intercepted communications, such as audio recordings may be compelling in the court of public opinion, they are not in a court of law." 

"This decision does not clear Rep. Brandtjen of any wrongdoing, there is just not enough evidence to move forward to let a factfinder decide,” Opper continued.

Soon after the election, Slinker confirmed WisRed was behind a text-message poll that asked Menomonee Falls residents whether they would support changing the district mascot back to the "Indians" — a name that was retired in 2019 as organizations like the National Congress of American Indians have said such mascots are derogatory. 

"There’s a lot of unrest from people who believe that was a mistake," Slinker said. "Every single board member that was there (in 2019) has now been removed. All seven." 

Slinker said about 59% of about 2,000 respondents said they wanted to revert to "Indians." He said he hadn't shared the results with board members but "figured they would find out."
